Tradition & Innovation

Wax Atelier re-visits traditional techniques ranging from candle dipping, paper making, to crafted textiles using natural wax. Making becomes a tool to experience the interconnection between the natural world and material culture.

WAX Atelier was founded in 2017 by multi-disciplinary designers Lola Lely and Yesenia Thibault-Picazo, in London.

Our products are manufactured in Poplar, East London, by a team of trained artisans, originating from the local community.

Environmental & Social Impact

Sustainability is at the core of our brand ethos. Most of our materials are locally sourced and our production is all done in-house, in small batches, using environmentally low-impact processes.

From its early days, Wax Atelier was founded with a strong interest in knowledge sharing. Creative workshops were proposed to diverse audiences. In 2020, with the support of the charity Participatory City Foundation, Lola and Yesenia trained a cohort of makers from Barking during a 3 months-long program.

At present, Wax Atelier counts approximately 8 employees, and is proud of the varied cultural and ethnical backgrounds of its team: a rich mix of makers from the local community, experienced designers and young graduates.

About the Founders

Born in Hanoi, Lola Lely grew up in London and was curious from an early age about how objects are made. Drawing, making and the connection between materials, process and maker are all central to her practice.

Yesenia Thibault-Picazo is a French-born musician and designer. Exploring narrative potentials of materials through collaborations with experts in the fields of geology, anthropology and craft, she uses design as a means to engage with diverse audiences on contemporary ecological challenges.
