Discover the fascinating craft of rope-making using plant fibers with designer Sanne Visser, during a drop-in session. This is part of our showcase program ‘Mother Goddess of the Three Realms: Cross encounters, joining threads’ , during London Design Festival 2023.
Join us for a hands-on demonstration where you'll delve into the traditional art of crafting ropes from natural, plant-based materials. Sanne will take you through the process of transforming fibres sourced in the UK and Vietnam into beautifully handcrafted ropes, using ancient techniques that push the boundaries of design and craftsmanship. Throughout this demonstration, you'll gain valuable insights into Sanne's design approach, particularly her innovative work with local waste materials (including human hair!). With nearly a decade of experience as a ropemaker, she'll guide you through the rope-making process using her unique foldable, open-source ropemaking machine. By the end of this interactive and engaging session, you'll have the knowledge and skills to design and craft your very own ropes.
Sanne Visser is a London-based design researcher exploring material innovation and future thinking through making and learning for circular worlds
